Most of what a car costs comes from maintenance nobody remembered

Fuel isn’t the real cost of a car. Fuel is visible, paid weekly, and therefore tracked by everyone. The real money leaves where nothing is visible: the oil change done late, the inspection appointment missed, the insurance renewal left to the last day, and the timing belt whose mileage came and went with nobody counting.

They share one property: each depends on remembering a date or a mileage, and human memory is bad at that. It’s hard with one car and impossible past two. The result is three scenes most drivers recognise — “your inspection has expired” at the test centre, waiting for a tow truck at the roadside, and an invoice larger than expected at the garage counter.

Odovo exists to prevent those three: keep every date and every mileage in one place, count the thresholds for you, and make what the car actually costs you visible.

How the record is built

1. The vehicle. Make, model, plate and current mileage. With more than one vehicle each is its own record; a personal car and a company van can sit side by side in the same account.

2. Two axes of reminder. This is Odovo’s core difference: a reminder attaches to a date and a mileage, and fires on whichever comes first. The distinction looks small and decides everything: at 25,000 miles a year mileage governs; at 3,000 miles a year the calendar does. A single-axis reminder is guaranteed to be wrong in one of those two cases.

3. Service and maintenance log. Every job is recorded with its date, mileage and cost. That log does three jobs at once: it computes the next threshold, it makes repeating faults visible, and when you sell, it leaves you with a documented car — the most concrete way to defend a used price.

4. Insurance, inspection and renewals. Document renewals sit as their own reminders. Annual jobs become habits; the five-yearly ones are what get forgotten — and holding those is precisely what saves the group nobody remembers.

5. Cost. Fuel, servicing, insurance, tax and repairs total per vehicle, so the true running cost over time — and cost per mile if you want it — comes from records rather than guesswork.

Who it’s built for

The single-car driver. The aim isn’t fleet management, it’s not forgetting: oil, inspection, insurance and tyre cycles. A few minutes of records a year prevents costs hundreds of times larger.

The two- or three-car household. More vehicles multiply the dates to remember — and the question of which car costs more can only be answered from records.

Tradespeople and small businesses with a small fleet. A service van, a pickup, a commercial vehicle: here a missed inspection isn’t just a fine, it’s stopped work. And cost per vehicle is the floor under your pricing: a business quoting per job without knowing its own per-mile cost may be losing money on the routes it believes are profitable.

Anyone planning to sell. A car with a documented service history sells above an undocumented one of the same age and mileage. That record starts months before the sale; it can’t be started on the day.

Who it is not for. Odovo is not a fleet management system. It does no route planning, driver assignment, fuel cards, telematics or dispatch. What it does is maintenance, documents and cost — for one car or for a handful — and it stops there. We say this plainly because a download that arrives with the wrong expectation wastes everyone’s time.

Spreadsheet comparison

Tracking maintenance in a spreadsheet is possible and works for a while with one car. It breaks in three places: no reminders (the sheet knows the date but never tells you), manual mileage (you enter the odometer and compute the threshold yourself every time), and it isn’t usable on a phone — while reading the odometer is, by definition, a moment spent standing at the car. Where your data lives

Everything you enter stays visible and editable. Vehicle and maintenance data belong to your account; in-app purchases and subscriptions run through the App Store and Google Play. Details in the privacy policy; account deletion is a one-step request on the account deletion page.

Getting started: the first ten minutes

Add the vehicle · enter current mileage · write down the last known service dates (oil, inspection, insurance) · then work backwards through whatever receipts you have. That last step is the easiest to skip and the most valuable: once history is in, the next threshold computes correctly and the car is documented from day one. No receipts? An approximate date still works — being a month out beats having no record at all.

Is Odovo free? One vehicle is free. Beyond that there’s an in-app subscription; current pricing and terms appear on the purchase screen.

Do reminders work on mileage as well as dates? Yes. Each maintenance item can be tied to both a date and a mileage, and the reminder fires on whichever arrives first.

How many vehicles can I add? Multiple vehicles are supported; personal and commercial vehicles sit as separate records in the same account.

What happens to the records when I sell the car? They stay with you. If you want to show a buyer the service history, the dates and mileages in your record complete the picture your paper receipts start.
