The ten-minute pre-check
1 · Lights (3 min). Get someone to help, or park close to a wall: dipped beam, main beam, indicators, hazards, brake lights, reverse light, number plate light. Brake lights are the single most missed item, because you never see them while driving.
2 · Tyres (2 min). Check tread depth — most tyres have a wear bar in the groove; if the tread is level with it, the tyre is done. Check pressures on all four.
3 · Glass and wipers (1 min). Replace torn wiper rubber; failing over a cheap consumable is absurd. A windscreen crack in the driver’s field of view will be flagged.
4 · Fluids and horn (1 min). Washer fluid topped up, horn working, parking brake holding.
5 · Required equipment (2 min). Whatever your jurisdiction mandates — commonly warning triangles, a first aid kit within date, a charged fire extinguisher, spare wheel and jack.
6 · Paperwork (1 min). Registration in the car, compulsory insurance valid, no outstanding tax or penalties.

Common practice: every two years for passenger cars, annually for commercial vehicles and taxis, with new vehicles exempt for an initial period. Which group your vehicle belongs to is on the registration document.
