Appliances Don't Fail Suddenly — The Warnings They Give First
Appliances don’t fail suddenly. They warn you first — the sound changes, the cycle takes longer, something smells, the electricity or water bill creeps up. What we call “the breakdown” is simply the moment those warnings pile up past the point of ignoring.
The difference is expensive. Someone who reads the signal books a planned repair: a weekday appointment, time to wait for a part, room to get a second quote. Someone who doesn’t calls an emergency engineer on the day it stops dead — usually a Sunday morning, usually with guests in the house. Same fault, roughly twice the price.
And there’s a quieter loss: the signal usually appears inside the warranty window, while the claim gets made after it has closed.
Four signals, whatever the appliance
Whatever the machine, watch four things. All four say the same thing: something changed.

Together they are how an appliance says “still working, but struggling.”
🔴 Three situations that mean stop now
These are not “let’s keep an eye on it” items. Stop using the appliance:
- A smell of gas. With a boiler, water heater or gas hob: don’t operate it, don’t touch electrical switches, turn the gas off at the meter, open windows, and call your national gas emergency line or a registered engineer from outside the property. Don’t investigate it yourself.
- Burning plastic or cable smell, sparking, a blackened socket. Unplug it — if the socket itself is hot, switch off at the consumer unit first — and call a qualified engineer.
- Water reaching the body of an electrical appliance, or a tingling sensation when you touch it. Switch off at the consumer unit and stop using it.

Fridge and freezer
- The motor barely stops. A fridge normally runs in cycles. Constant running usually means: the door seal is leaking, the rear condenser coil is dusty, the unit is too close to the wall, the thermostat has drifted, or refrigerant is low.
- The door seal isn’t sealing. The paper test: shut a sheet of paper in the door and pull. If it slides out easily, the seal isn’t working. Seals are cheap; the electricity a bad one wastes is not.
- A thick layer of ice on the back wall or snow building in the freezer — defrost system or seal.
- Water pooling at the bottom: the drain channel is blocked. Usually a cleaning job; left alone it turns into smell and mould.
- The back of the unit too hot to touch: insufficient ventilation, pushed too close to the wall, or dust.
Washing machine
- Walking, banging or roaring on the spin cycle. This is the classic early signal: drum bearings or shock absorbers. Caught early it’s a part; caught late it’s a whole drum assembly, and the price gap is large.
- Slow to fill: the inlet filter is blocked or the valve is weakening. Cleaning the inlet filter is a user job.
- Water left in the drum at the end of a cycle: drain pump or pump filter. That filter wants cleaning monthly and is the single most neglected piece of appliance maintenance there is.
- Mould and smell on the door seal: the side effect of only ever washing cool. A monthly empty 60-90°C cycle and drying the seal fixes it.
- Residue building in the detergent drawer: limescale in the water, which means the same deposit is on the heating element.
Dishwasher
- Glasses going cloudy, grit left on plates: a scaled heating element, water not reaching temperature, or blocked spray arms.
- Water left in the base after a cycle: filter or pump.
- Steam escaping around the door: the seal.
- The door has gone heavy and drops open: spring or hinge. Left alone it pulls the door out of alignment and the seal starts to leak.
Boiler
The boiler is both the most critical appliance and the one with the clearest signals.
- Pressure keeps dropping. If you’re topping it up weekly, there is a leak in the system or the boiler. “Top it up and carry on” makes it worse, not better.
- Radiator cold at the top, warm at the bottom: air in the system; bleed it. Cold all over is a different problem: valve or circulation.
- Delayed ignition, a bang on lighting, a yellow or orange flame. The flame should be blue; yellow indicates incomplete combustion: stop using it and call a registered engineer.
- Hot water surging between hot and lukewarm: a scaled heat exchanger. This is the classic thing a summer service catches, which I covered in why to book your boiler service in summer.
- Repeated fault codes and lockouts: write the code down and give it to the engineer; it cuts diagnosis time.
Air conditioning
- Cooling has weakened: clean the filter first (a two-minute user job). If that doesn’t fix it: refrigerant loss or compressor.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit: the drain line is blocked or has lost its fall.
- A bad smell while running: mould in the indoor unit. It needs cleaning; ignored, it affects the air you breathe.
- Metallic noise or vibration outdoors: a fan bearing or a loose mounting.
- It never reaches the set temperature: if the unit isn’t simply undersized, it’s losing refrigerant.

Oven and hob
- Noticeably longer to reach temperature: element or thermostat.
- Food burning or undercooking at the set temperature: thermostat drift. An oven thermometer settles it in ten minutes.
- The door doesn’t close flush and the glass runs hot: the seal.
- A yellow, sooty flame on the hob: a blocked burner; a cleaning job if there’s no gas smell, and an emergency if there is.
Write down the date you noticed it
If this page has one practical rule, it’s this one.
The sentence you say to the engineer determines how long the diagnosis takes. Between “it’s broken” and “it has been noisy on the spin cycle since 12 July, at first only with heavy loads, and for the last two weeks on every wash” there is an enormous difference to a repairer. The second version often prevents a second visit, because the engineer brings the part with them.
Three things to note:
- The date the symptom first appeared.
- The symptom: in which mode, when, how often.
- The fault code, if any, plus the model and serial number.

Repair or replace
Signal read, diagnosis made, quote in hand. The decision point: if the repair costs more than half a new machine and the appliance is in the last third of its expected life, repairing is usually just deferring the spend. The language is simple: sound, duration, smell, consumption. When one of the four changes, write down the date. That single habit converts most emergency call-outs into planned maintenance.
